1 John 2:12-13

"I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name. I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father."

In this passage, John wrote about the three stages of spiritual growth - Children, young men and fathers. Let's look at the children first. The first characteristic of the children is that they know the Father and they know that life comes from Him. In the Lord we have the same life and we have all accepted God's life. Life of a Christian is not just one of a "sinner-in-repair", but rather a brand new life; it's not an old life that has been fixed and remodeled, but rather a completely new life. That's why Nicodemus couldn't understand what Jesus said about being born again - Was it to return to the mother's womb and be physically born again? Not quite, the new life is born from water and Holy Spirit, for we receive the new life from God's Word and Holy Spirit, and then this new life enables us to be connected to other believers.

Many people wonder why there are so many denominations. The fact is that even though various denominations have different views on the rituals, we are one in the Spirit. Our unity is not shown through an organization or in our outward form, but it's in our life. As long as we have the same life from our Father God, we belong to the same family much like one physical family. When siblings are fighting, sometimes they ask why they would have brothers and sisters; the best answer is that because we belong to the same family so we need to accept one another. In the same way, even though there are many different denominations and formats in Christianity that sometime may have disagreements, we are still one because we have the same Heavenly Father and same life.

The second characteristic of the children is that they sins are forgiven. When we are connected to the life of God, the life of Jesus Christ is inside us, and thus our sins can be forgiven. How do we know that our sins are forgiven? It's because God's Word is the foundation of our life and our faith.   Shortly after I accepted the Lord back in middle school, one time a counselor asked me: "are you saved?" I thought about it but couldn't respond immediately. The counselor realized that I wasn't sure about my salvation, so he showed me God's Word in Romans 10:9, "that if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." He asked me: "Do you confess with your mouth and believe in your heart?" I said yes, and then he said "you will be saved!" I was suddenly awakened and I had the assurance in my heart that as soon as I confess with my mouth and believe in my heart that Jesus was resurrected from death, God's Word told me that I will be saved. When we come before God, not only will God's new life come upon us, our sins will also be forgiven, and that is a precious promise!

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, I thank you because in Christ you give us new life that can overcome sin. I ask that the life that overcomes sin will always help us and strengthen us. I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

1 John 2:9-11

"Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him."

Our relationship with the brothers and sisters in the Lord is indicative of our relationship with God. We cannot say that we are walking in the light of the Lord yet hate our brothers; if we hate our brothers, it means we are living in the darkness and we need to first be delivered by the Lord. Our hearts can only be delivered when we overcome sin, not through rational analysis. Rational analysis only works on other people and it's useless when applied to our own issues. We can't rely on will power either, because will power may help you to hold back your temper, but won't help you to forgive and accept others from the heart. If you want to be delivered, there's no use to struggle, seek revenge or explain by your own might, because the only way to be delivered is to come before God and place yourself on His hands.   We can only see the pitiful state of our inner darkness when the Holy Spirit shines into us and reveal to us how much we really need the Lord's forgiveness and mercy. The more we see our need for the Lord's forgiveness and acceptance, the less we will care about how others have forsaken us and it becomes easier for us to reconcile with others.

Years ago I was serving together with a brother at church. He was straight-shooter, and slowly it started to bother me. One time I was conducting the choir, and he commented that I looked like a monkey doing circus tricks. I was really mad at him, and since then whenever he started talking I was agitated. The worst part was that he didn't know I was mad at him! Gradually I didn't feel like going to the choir or serving in any other capacity. Then, I came across the biblical passage about loving and forgiving one another, as if the Lord was rebuking me. Finally, one day I broken down in tears and repented before God and ask the Lord to rule my life again, because I just couldn't love that brother. I realized that I was weaker than I thought, and I asked the Lord to forgive me for my arrogance and pride. God revealed to me that I really cared about myself more than anything, so I had to keep on coming before God and ask the Spirit of God to help me to overcome the bondage inside. Eventually, I was able to accept the brother.

Brothers and sisters, if you want to be delivered, the only way is to turn back to God and put yourself in God's hands. He is a glorious deliverer and He can deliver you today!

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, I thank you because you are the glorious deliverer. May the grace of your glorious deliverance come upon us today! I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

1 John 2:7-8

"Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining."

The command the Lord gives us is both an old one and a new one. First, the old command the Lord gives us is in Mark 12:30, where he summarized the laws in the Old Testament into two: first "love your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength", second "love your neighbors as yourself". The gist of the old command is to love your neighbors as yourself, and love others the way you love yourself. Everyone loves himself. It is hard to feel others' pains no matter how great the pains are. But we can always feel our own pain. Therefore, Jesus tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves, which is the ultimate love among human beings. This kind of love includes what the Chinese would say like "Don't impose anything you dislike on others". Don't impose anything you don't like on others, for you have to love others as yourself. This kind of love also includes what is said in the Beatitudes: "You need to treat others the way you like to be treated." This is how Christians should treat others, which is also the gist of the laws in the Old Testament.

The Lord gives us the new command in John 13:34-35: "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another." This is the command the Lord gives us in the New Testament. This new command is not supposed to revoke or replace the old one. Rather, God's command is promoted to a new level. The new command the Lord gives us is no longer about loving our neighbors as ourselves, but loving one another just like Jesus have loved us instead. How did the Lord love us? He sacrificed himself by coming to this world for us. Therefore, we should renew ourselves to love others, even more than we love ourselves, under this command. This love cannot be lived out by our sinful nature. Rather, it can only come from the Lord.

During the Cultural Revolution in China, many believers were persecuted and put in jail. But they still tried to bear witness out of their love for the Lord. Many people even saved the last piece of bread for those who were needy, when they barely had anything to feed themselves. This kind of testimony touched a lot of people, so that the gospel was spread more rapidly even during the Cultural Revolution. Since the believers lived out the sacrificing love of Christ, this kind of testimony of love carried power. May God help us, so that we not only receive the love of Christ, but also can live out the sacrificing love of Christ.

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, we thank you for giving us a command for us to not only love our neighbors as ourselves, but also love one another. Lord, our love is limited. May the Spirit pour down your love from the throne into our heart, so that we can love people around us with your sacrificing love. We thank you and we pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

1 John 2:3-6

"We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for Godis truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did."

John said that if someone knows the Lord, he must keep his commands. "Know" in the original language means the intimacy between a couple. The Bible tells us to know the Lord, meaning that the relationship is never the knowledge but some kind of intimacy. In other words, a person who loves the Lord will definitely keep his commands. Love and obedience can never be separated. If someone loves, he will definitely obey. An obedient person must be so because he is touched by God's love.

Do you love the Lord? Love is actually the original motivation for our faith. When I was working in the DC area, I used to have a friend whose girlfriend lived in New York City. He would drive for five hours to New York City to meet her every Friday, then drive for another five hours back to DC every Sunday afternoon before he went to work the next day. We all thought it must be exhausting for him to do so. But he was never exhausted. And he was happy to do so. Why? Because there was love. Over the years as a minister, I started to pay more and more attention to this. I used to just emphasize what should and what should not be done. But more and more I started to realize that my teaching did not go anywhere. Many people know what should be done. But they never did it, because they did not have the motivation, which is love! When I started to teach brothers and sisters to love the Lord, I found that naturally as the result they would start to do what should be done. If someone loves the Lord, he would naturally make offerings and serve the Lord, for there is love inside him, which becomes his motivation.

How can we love the Lord more? The easiest way is to worship and praise. During worship we keep telling God: "Lord, we love you". On one hand we express our love to the Lord. On the other hand, what we say also reinforces how we feel.  May God open our heart, so that we can come to him and freely express our love to him. When we express in this way, our love for him will also grow, which is also the basic command to keep, for the Lord says that the greatest command among all commands is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, we thank you. We love you because you first loved us. May you put our love for you inside us, so that we are willing to serve you and people around us every day. We do that not because we should do so, but because we love you. We thank you and we pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

1 John 2:1-2

"My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father-Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world."

John addressed the Lord Jesus by several names: first, Jesus is the mediator. The so-called mediator is the guarantor in between. There was not connection originally between the sinful people and the sinless God. But Jesus came to this world and acted as a bridge in between, which is what a mediator stands for, connecting God to human beings.

Second, Jesus is the Righteous One. Jesus is the sinless savior. Because of that, he is able to take our place for God's punishment on sins. There might be many so-called righteous people in this world, too. But they appear righteous to us, and they are still sinners to God. They need salvation themselves. Their deeds might keep them from dying physically, but will not make them exempt from God's judgment on their sins, or God's judgment on them. From people's perspective, some people might be able to be exempt from judgment. But the judge is not any of us, but the holy God. Only those deemed righteous by God will receive salvation, for the salvation is not from us, but from God our Lord. Our righteousness is just like a rag, unable to save us at all. Only Jesus is that Righteous One, our savior.

Third, Jesus becomes the atoning sacrifice for us. Why the so-called atoning sacrifice is offered is because we were all astray and forsaken by God, but now the Lord redeemed our sins. By the salvation accomplished by Jesus on the cross, God's heart is turned around to us. Our hearts are turned around to God. And John said here that the atoning sacrifice is not only for our sins, but also for the sins of this world. God's love is not prepared only for us believers, but also for anyone in the world. This passage will help us understand how long, wide, high and deep God's love is. Sometimes it is hard to imagine how God would love the homosexuals, the drug dealers and the prostitutes. But God still loves them deeply, accepts them, and stays with them, so that they can also enjoy God's love. Brothers and sisters, have you received God's love? Are you willing to spread God's love in your life?

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, thank you for becoming the atoning sacrifice for us. You already loved us when we were sinners and resisting you. May you put such love inside our heart so that we can accept people around us and love them with the love of Christ. We thank you and we pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

1 John 1:9-10

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us."

Why is it so important to confess our sins? Why our sins are not forgiven until we confess our sins? Actually it is not that God cannot forgive our sins. Rather, we cannot overcome the oppression of the sins until we seriously confess our sins. It is just like when I have arguments with Pastor Belinda. Even though she is forgiving, there is still something unsolved between us until I say sorry. Likewise, when we come to God and confess our sins, it is actually not for God, but for our own sake, so that we can approach God with boldness. In fact, this passage gives us a precious promise. God always keeps his promise and never breaks one. So when we confess to him our sins, we don't have to worry that he might punish us, for his word is the proof that He says He will certainly forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

When we have such a faithful and righteous God, shouldn't we bring all our needs to Him in prayer with boldness? When we confess our sins, we have to be specific. Why? Why can't we just say: "Lord, forgive all my sins"? The reason is that you haven't taken that sin seriously. Even it is forgiven, that sin still oppresses you, which is why many believers keep sinning. The problem is not the outward sin, but its power inside. Therefore, ask the Lord to examine your heart to check whether there is anything that God doesn't like, and ask for His forgiveness and purification by His precious blood. You can take out a piece of paper right now and draw a line in the middle. Ask the Lord to help you list on the left side all your sins and iniquities, and take them to the Lord. On the right side, just write down 1 John 1:9. Then proclaim in the name of the Lord that all your sins are forgiven! Praise Him and thank Him. Then dispose of, tear up, or burn this piece of paper, and receive God's forgiveness by faith.

God's salvation is not just for your past and your future, but something that you may experience right now. May God's grace of forgiveness come to you today!

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, we thank you and we bring all our sins and iniquities to you. You are faithful and righteous. When we confess our sins, you will erase all our transgressions. We thank you and we pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!
