Romans 9:30-33

"What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone. As it is written: 'See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumbleand a rock that makes them fall, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.'"

As for the Jews, their problem was that they relied on their status and works. By status, they were God's chosen people. God's salvation came from them. By works, they had the law from God, by which they lived their everyday life, unlike the Gentiles who were completely living in the darkness. So at that time the Jews were very proud of themselves. Here Paul said with groans that they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works, therefore they stumbled instead.

You and I may or may not be one of the Jews, but we are still like the Jews sometimes who are so self-complacent and self-righteous that they don't think they need the gospel of the Lord. Chinese Christians in North America especially tend to rely on their fortune and circumstances. If everything goes well, they would think that God's favor is on them. So they are more engaged in the worldly activities while getting further away from God. In church we also tend to rely on formalities and outward rules, such as reading the whole Bible once a year, tithing, joining cell groups, etc. Once we have made achievement in these areas, we would think that we are fairly holy. Actually all we do is to pursue the law as the way of righteousness. We fail to pursue God's righteousness instead. In verse 33, the Lord is both the stone of stumbling and the rock to rely on. Why is He both the stone of stumbling and the rock that never puts people to shame at the same time? Actually the Lord never changes. For those who want to rely on themselves, due to the fact they are unable to receive the salvation of the Lord, and they don't think they need to do so, they are unwilling to follow the Lord. From this perspective, the way of the Lord becomes their stumbling stone instead to keep them from the salvation. On the other hand, for those who trust in the Lord, due to their faith and humility, they are saved. And they will never be put in shame by the never-changing God.

How are you responding to the Lord? Are you willing to be faithful and humble, and follow God with all your heart? The Lord has promised that the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame!

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, we thank you, for you are the rock in our life. Even the circumstances keep changing, people around us keep changing, those who believe in you will never be put to shame. May the Lord help us not to rely on ourselves any more, but to trust in you and follow you. We thank you and we pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Romans 9:25-29

"As he says in Hosea: 'I will call them 'my people' who are not my people; and I will call her 'my loved one' who is not my loved one,' and, It will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, "You are not my people," they will be called 'sons of the living God.'  Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: 'Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved.  For the Lord will carry out his sentence on earth with speed and finality.'"

Ever since the Old Testament time, God has put you in His heart, as He already predestined the gentiles to be saved.  Book of Josiah says that "I will call them 'my people' who are not my people; and I will call her 'my loved one' who is not my loved one."   In other word, we the gentiles were not chosen just because the Israelites were disobedient, but we were clearly chosen and predestined for salvation by God.

Ephesians 1:4 says that "for He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy."  We didn't think we were loved, but now we know we are loved by God.  Have you ever been loved and do you know that God still loves you?  So many times you encounter challenges and difficulties in life and feel that no one cares and helps you, but God wants to tell you that you are His beloved.  Because we believe and accept the Lord, we have become the children of eternal God and our loving Father God is taking care of us.  Just like what a hymn says, "Father God will care for you, at any time and in every way."  His will for us is always good, for He never changes and there's no revolving shadows in him.  We may also enjoy the abundance of salvation in Christ and in the precious blood of the Lord we have tremendous power.  Not only can such power release us from the bondage of sin, it can also protect us from any attack by Satan.  The Bible tells us that because of the salvation of Jesus, God has turned Christ into our wisdom, righteousness, holiness and redemption.  Jesus Christ is the Lord who can meet all our needs.  Not only that, we also have the presence of Holy Spirit inside us so that we may have the joy of deliverance and power to serve.  We don't deserve all these blessings, but God is gracious to us.  It is God who chose us, not we chose God.

Do you know that you are loved by God?  May the Spirit of God open your eyes today so that you may understand the love of God and joyfully run into His arms.

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, I thank you for your love, because you have not only chosen unworthy people like us, you also love us so much.  May your Spirit open our eyes to understand you immense love in your selection, and let us run into your arms to enjoy the blessings we are predestined for.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Romans 9:19-24

"...But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? 'Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this?'  Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?  What if God, choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath - prepared for destruction?  What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory - even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?"

Have you ever asked God WHY?  We often feel that we are treated unfairly because of some circumstances; we hearts struggle and our mouths are filled with complaints.  The reason for all these is that deep down inside we feel that we deserve everything and we are supposed to receive God's grace.  When we are singing hymns and praying, we like to sing and say "Lord you are the potter, and I am the clay," just like what verse 21 says, "Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?"  We all agree with this in theory and we can amen to it; however, when we see that our neighbor, who's a clay that's used as by the master to be expensive utensils, but we are used to be the garbage can, we will feel uneasy and unfair.  Actually, utensils and garbage can are equally important in the house of God, but one is more visible and the other is less visible.  We feel things are unfair inside and we ask why.  Wasn't Peter like that too?  When he knew that he will suffer for the Lord and be brought to places where he didn't want to go, the first thing he thought of was John so he asked the Lord what would happen to him, because he felt that if he was to suffer, he should go through it alone.  We often compare with others with such attitude of unfairness, but the Lord said to him: "If John will be around until my return, how does it concern you?  Just follow me!"

Today, the Lord is always calling you to "just follow me"!  If you are in bitterness and hatred, your heart is bound by much thought of unfairness, just ask the Spirit of the Lord to release you.  Humble yourself to simply follow the Lord, because He is the potter and you and I are just clay.  As soon as you humble yourself, you will find that grace of God is sufficient for us.

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, I thank you because you are the potter of our life and you have special plan in us.  Please come into our heart and release us, let us not be bound by unfairness in our heart, but rather let us be filled with thanksgiving because your sufficient grace.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Romans 9:10-18

"...Is God unjust? Not at all!  For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion."  It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy.  For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: "I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.  Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden."

Paul here explained the authority and mercifulness of God.  Someone has given the term "authority of God" a simple yet profoundly meaningful explanation - "He is God and you are not."  Indeed, we need to be constantly reminded of this truth.  If God is the Lord, He has absolute power to accomplish His work by His will in His time.  Just like what verse 11 to 16 says, it doesn't matter what people do, but it's totally up to God.  Paul stressed this point so that no one would boast.  He used Esau and Pharaoh as examples as both of them rejected God.  Esau took God's blessing lightly and walked on the way of the world by his own will; Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and his heart remained hard even after witnessing many miracles and thus did not allow Israelites to leave Egypt.  He proudly said that it was the god of Egypt that hardened his heart.  Actually, above all things, God is still always in control.  Even if people reject Him and was hardened, they are still in the hands of God.  God's wonderful will can surpass hindrance from people and be completed.

In Romans chapter 1, Paul explained this truth by saying "God gave them over."  God gave people over to sin and allow people to hardened, reject God and eventually become perished by the law of God.  Is God unfair?  Not at all, because He is filled with mercy; as soon as we humble ourselves and acknowledge that we are inadequate, God will save us with His grace and mercy.  Because of God's authority we cannot boast, and His mercy will allow us to enjoy His salvation even though we are not worthy.  We need to understand about God's mercy so that our hearts are not hardened and we won't disobey, complain, and always like to ask God "why".

What we really need is to humble ourselves and rest in the working hands of God, let Him accomplish His work on us.  You'd rather have disciplining by God come upon you than letting God give you over to sin.  Don't forget that He is a merciful God and His mercy is prepared for every heart and soul that is open to Him

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, we thank you because you are the God who's full of mercy.  May you extend your mercy to all brothers and sisters whose hearts are open.  May your working right hand manifest your power on us.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Romans 9:6-9

"It is not as though God's word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.  Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham's children. On the contrary, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned."   In other words, it is not the natural children who are God's children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring.  For this was how the promise was stated: "At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son."

God is faithful and His promises will always come true.  But why are the Israelites, God's chosen people, abandoned by God?  Paul once again explained God's will in His selection.  First, "for not all who are descended from Israel are Israel."  In God's eyes, He doesn't value a person's appearance or background, but only a person's heart.  If God only values appearance, then those of us who are not Jews have no chance for receiving His grace.  We, however, thank God because He doesn't show favoritism and He doesn't value our appearance, but only our heart.  That's why Paul said in Romans 2:28-29 that "A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical.  No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code."

Second, "nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham's children."  Abraham actually had many children, but only Isaac was the one promised by God, because Isaac was the son given to Abraham according to His way in His time.  Before Abraham has Isaac, he and Hagar had Ishmael in his own way, but God told him that the offspring He will give to Abraham was not his servant or Ishmael.  Abraham was puzzled because he thought that he and Sarah were too old to have children anymore, so how could he possibly have a child?  God then told Abraham that same time next year He will give Abraham a son and the son should be named Isaac.  "Isaac" means God's time and God's way, not by the plan of men but by the sovereignty of God.

Third, "it is not the natural children who are God's children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring."  That's why Israelites were abandoned - God's promise will always control true, but there was a condition to it.  It didn't matter whether a person is a Jew or has been baptized, but a person must obey God's guidance.  A person who follows God's guidance will be able to enjoy all the grace that God has promised.  Brothers and sisters, are you willing to be such an obedient person?

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, I thank you because you are the God who doesn't show favoritism, and your promise will never be unfulfilled.  Let us be determined to obey you and seek your will in our daily life so that your will may be done.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Romans 9:1-5

"I speak the truth in Christ - I am not lying, my conscience confirms it in the Holy Spirit - I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.  For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race, the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises.  Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen."

Starting from Romans chapter 9, Paul started talking about the important concept of God's sovereignty and mercy.  This was particularly difficult concept for the Israelites to understand.  They were God's chosen people and also offspring of Abraham, and they obeyed the Old Testament law from God.  Therefore, they considered themselves righteous and thought they were saved just because who they were and what they did.  According to the Bible, however, the reality is that no one can be saved by what they do.  We are saved by God's mercy and His sovereignty, that way no one can boast that they have chosen God and it was all their own merit; the fact is the God first chose us and made us His children.

For the Israelites, because thought they were righteous, they went farther away from God.  For the gentles, because they didn't feel worthy, they sought God's mercy and received salvation.  As a Jew, Paul saw his own people, who were supposed to be God's chosen people, abandoned outside of the door of salvation and he was deeply saddened.  That's why in verse two he said: "I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. "  His sorrow and pain was not caused by his own suffering, but rather it was for his people.  He felt sad because he saw that his people will received God's punishment for their sin, and he'd rather be "cursed and cut off from Christ" if that's what it takes for his people to be saved.

The spirit of evangelism was burning inside Paul; while he knew that God's heart was in the church, he still pleaded for his people - the Israelites - before God.  Brothers and sisters, do we also have such fervor for the gospel for our kinsmen?  Are we willing to pay the price of prayer for the 1.3 billion Chinese people, and especially for our relatives?  An effective intercessor is one who understands the merciful heart of God and pray earnestly by holding on to God's promises.  The intercessor will also pray persistently until He reveals His heart.  Just like how Moses stood on the gap and prayed for the Israelites, God is asking us to stand on the gap to pray for our kinsmen today.  Are you willing to pay the price of prayer?

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, please let brothers and sisters rise up and become prayer warriors in the end time.  Let us see the needs of our kinsmen and pray that your mercy will fall from heaven.  May the Lord have mercy on China so that China will become yours.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!
