Luke 2:33-35

"The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him.  Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: 'This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too...'"

Simeon was a prophet of God.  He clearly knew that Jesus was going down a path of suffering in order for Him to be glorified.  After he blessed the parents of Jesus, he told Mary that Jesus will rise up so that some in Israel will stumble, but others will also rise up.  Jesus did not bring forth a gospel that pleases everyone; He preached the truth, which is the only way, but many don't like the fact that it's the "only way."  Many believe that different faiths should accept each other, coexist in peace and let "all roads lead to Rome."  Truth, however, cannot be compromised, so people only have two options - embrace the truth, or reject, even defy, the truth.  As long as the truth is around, it will reveal the unrighteousness in the hearts of people.

God often reveal the intention of the people through circumstance.  Some people look spiritual, but when faced with critical decision, their dark and ugly hearts are revealed.  Jesus is the true light, and when the true light shines on us, darkness has nowhere to hide and it must be revealed.  Simeon told Mary that "a sword will pierce your own soul," which means a mother's heart will be broken and she will experience the pain of losing a child.  When Jesus was nailed on the cross, Mary stood beneath the cross and saw her favorite child there; she must have suffered tremendous sorrow to see someone so much younger pass away.  Even though she understood God's will, how could a mother's heart not have felt like it was pierced?  Mary was an obedient servant, and God's will was done through her.

When we hear the Lord's voice and face with the message of salvation, what will be our response?  Are we filled with joy and embrace all the grace offered by Christ, or will we reject the authority of Jesus and insist on walking on our own path?

Pray with Pastor Tong

Lord, I thank you because you have given us sufficient strength to follow you.  When your grace and gospel are placed before us, please help us to always choose your way and not our own way.  Let us choose your glory each and every time, but not to seek our own satisfaction.  Let us glorify you all our life and let your will be done.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Luke 2:28-32

"Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: 'Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace.  For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.'"

Simeon had great ambitions for God.  In the story of the Lord's birth, one amazing fact is that many elderly people were involved.  Zechariah and Elizabeth became pregnant when they were old, Simeon was an elderly servant who's been waiting for God, and prophetess Anna encountered Jesus when she was 84.  I often tell the elderly people that they should never think they can't do much for God because they are old.  We can be constrained by such thoughts and thus cannot experience full extend of God's abundance.

Simeon had great expectation for God: Lord, I want to see your glory in my lifetime!  In Psalm 90:16-17, Moses mentioned his four biggest wishes in life; the first one was not to have power and riches, but to see the splendid of God in his lifetime.  Those who have been used by God throughout generation often have the same eagerness.  Do you have such eagerness?  It is not a wish for coincidence, but an eagerness that will last a lifetime, which may surpass eagerness for anything else.  Just like Simeon, if we can see God's deeds, nothing else in life is worth living for; when he held baby Jesus in his arms, his with was completely satisfied.

For a while we have lost great expectation for God.  Many believers are just following the routine of attending weekly gatherings to fulfill Christians' obligation; however, there's no zeal for our faith, nor expectation for God to perform great and wonderful things.  God is still our great God, and He's the God who's the same yesterday, today and forever.  We need to pray for the revival of God's kingdom feverishly, pray by ourselves but also with other brothers and sisters.  God, may this world see your deeds!  We have heard about your work in the past, and we heard about your work in other places now, but we are not satisfied!  May you reveal your glory through us in this generation!  May the Lord bring forth a glorious revival, and let us once again have a thorough understanding of God's power.  Let all people and all nations know our God, for He is the true God of power and authority!

Pray with Pastor Tong

Dear Lord, I ask that you give all brothers and sisters a fire to pray for the Kingdom.  In your victorious name, release them from all kinds of hindrance that kept them from praying.  I ask that you raise up prayer warriors, give us the burden to pray, like Simeon, until our eyes see your glory manifested on earth.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Luke 2:21-27

"Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.  It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ.  Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required..."

The birth of Jesus Christ was closely related to the Holy Spirit.  Luke chapters 1 and 2 mentioned different types of work by the Spirit seven times.  Simeon was a man who's filled by the Holy Spirit, and it was evident in three ways:

1. Holy Spirit resided in him, so he had the presence of the Holy Spirit with him.  This is the most basic work by the Holy Spirit on the believers.  When someone accepts the Lord, the Holy Spirit resides in his life and will never leave him.  The presence of the Holy Spirit is an assurance to the believers, for it verifies that we belong to God.  Many brothers and sisters don't understand this truth and often have questions about it: If the Holy Spirit is with us when we accept the Lord, then why do we need to pray for the Holy Spirit to come?  That's because even though the Spirit is inside us, but He might not be able to move within you freely, much like being frozen inside and cannot do anything.

2. Revelation from the Holy Spirit, for we ought to learn to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit in everything.  1 John 2:27 says that "As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has taught you, remain in him."  The anointing of the Lord can direct you in everything that you do, and the Spirit inside can speak to us in our life, but have we calmed down in order to listen to His voice?

3. Following the moving of the Holy Spirit.  When Simeon was moved by the Holy Spirit and he knew he was going to meet Savior Messiah, he didn't simply sit tight and wait.  Many people only know how to wait, but forget about action.  Simeon was moved by the Spirit, so he followed the Spirit to the temple, where he encountered Jesus.  If he didn't follow the moving of the Spirit, he might have missed the opportunity.  Very often, it is not that the Holy Spirit didn't prompt us, but we were quick to extinguish the prompting of the Holy Spirit.  Sometimes the Spirit reminds you to make a call and pay someone a visit, but you miss the opportunity given by God and thus miss the opportunity to experience God's abundance.

How in the Holy Spirit in your life today?  Do you just have the presence of the Holy Spirit inside, or are you just enjoying the fellowship with Holy Spirit?  The most important thing is to be sensitive to the moving of the Spirit, and to follow the Spirit in order to accomplish God's work.

Pray with Pastor Tong

Lord, I thank you because not only is Holy Spirit inside us to assure us that we belong to God, the Spirit also speaks and let us collaborate with God.  May the Lord give us a sensitive heart and listening ears so that we can distinguish your voice, and give us a courageous heart so that we can follow your prompting, to become an open channel for your blessings.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Luke 2:15-20

"When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."  So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.  When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.  But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart."

The angels delivered news of great joy to the shepherds, and the shepherds went off to spread the good news.  There were actually three types of reaction towards the good news:

1. The reaction of spectators.  When they heard the news from angels, they were surprised and amazed, thinking whether it was believable, or "that's great, but I'm busy now, so don't forget when you have more good news to share."  Nowadays, there are also many with attitude of spectators.  What is it that you are eager for and seeking for?  If you seek, you shall find.  If in your heart you are only a spectator for spiritual matters, then you will only receive what a spectator gets.  You will never really enter into the truth, nor will you have a real experience in faith.  May God help us, never remain as a spectator, but enter into the grace of the Lord.

2. The reaction of Mary.  She heard the news from the angels, and she Mary "treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart," which is truly precious.  When we hear God's word, we ought to ponder it in our heart, and to save God's promises and grace inside our heart.  Lord's Spirit has reminded me that if the Lord wanted to use a body to put authority of sin to death, He didn't have to come as a baby, for He could have come to earth as an adult and just go straight to the cross.  Lord, however, would rather come as a baby in order to identify with us through experiencing the growing pain of life, and that makes salvation ever more precious.  When you put God's word inside you and ponder it, the more you ponder the more precious it will be, and you will be able to enter God's will more easily.

3. The reaction of the shepherds.  When they heard the news, they joyfully accepted it and also took action to look for the baby, and they put aside their sheep in order to worship the Savior.  Not only did they hear the joyful news, but they also spread the news.  We also need to spread this wonderful news in our daily life.  A simple "Jesus loves you" can touch people around you more than you can imagine.  You don't need be to extraordinarily eloquent, but you just need a heart that loves the Lord and loves people, and then you can spread the gospel.

After hearing God's word, what type of reaction do you have?

Pray with Pastor Tong

Dear Lord, please bless everyone who heard and witnessed this great news.  Help us not to be just spectators, but let us hide your word inside our heart to ponder on, and spread the great news with a joyful heart.  Use us to be channel of blessing to others.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Luke 2:8-14

"And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christthe Lord...  Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.'"

The first ones who received the good news about Jesus from the angels were a group of shepherds out in the field.  They were ordinary people, for no one knew their names.  God didn't pick famous people to receive the good news, but He chose ordinary people like you and me.  The significance of the birth of Lord Jesus is that He chose to know you and love you, and He likes to reveal to the ordinary you.  Also, the shepherds were working in shifts, as they were the office workers of the first century.  They follow the same working schedule day in and day out in order to make a living.  But on that night, something unusual happened, because a great light shined on them and angels revealed the "good news of great joy" to them.  The joyful news was for "all the people," which includes you and me; the great news of joy was not only for the shepherds, or the magi from the east, but it's also for you and me.

Also, the content of the news was to report the birth of a savior.  We need a savior because we were living in sin.  Look at the people around us who have no peace and joy; read the newspapers and all you see is news of darkness.  The society is dark, and hearts of people are dark as well, so we really need a savior.  What was the sign for the Savior to be born?  A baby wrapped in cloth and lying in a manger - that was the sign.  It was such a great contrast: How could a meager baby become the almighty Savior?  That is the mystery of God!  Jesus was willing to humble Himself to become a man for our sake, and to experience all the temptations and suffering that people need to go through since birth, all for us to be freed from the authority of sin.

Finally, the result of the great news of joy is that the angels told the shepherds: "Do not be afraid."  We thank God because love that is complete can remove all fear.  Are you enjoying this great news?  Are you enjoying the joy that this great news should have brought you?

Pray with Pastor Tong

Dear Lord, I thank you because you came in order for us to be freed from all worries and fear.  May you fill our hearts today with the joy of your birth, and let us experience how real you are in our life.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!
