Luke 9:37-43
"A man in the crowd called out, 'Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.' 'O unbelieving and perverse generation,' Jesus replied, 'how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.'"
"Unbelief" was not just an issue with the disciples, but also a message for our generation. The father here can truly represent this generation. He went to the disciples for his sick child, but he didn't really have true faith and he just wanted to give it a try. He should have kept on praying with the disciples for his son, but his heart was hardened and he didn't believe it would work. That's why when Jesus heard what he said, He said "O unbelieving and perverse generation... how long shall I stay with you and put up with you?"
When this father went before Jesus, he had doubts and he didn't think Jesus would be able to help, but if Jesus actually performed a miracle, it would be fine too. Many come before God without genuine faith, so we need to ask for God's mercy to see whether we have unbelief and weakness inside, to acknowledge our sins and ask the Lord to cover our sins with His precious blood. We need to come before God with faith to receive grace and healing.
After this father humbled himself, the Lord had mercy on him and immediately helped him. We need to seek help from the Spirit of the Lord. Ask the Lord to show His authority and power, acknowledge our unbelief, and ask the Holy Spirit to put a genuine faith inside us. In this generation of unbelief, the Lord is still willing to perform signs and wonders, and He is still looking for those who are loyal and faithful. Let us come before God in humility, place the authority of our life in his hands. If you have any need in your life, you may bring them before Jesus; the Lord can break any bondage of the authority of darkness, release us from it, and we will enjoy the freedom and joy in the spirit.
