Colossians 3:19
Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
What is love? To love your wife is to pay attention to her. Real love is not about what you give to your wife, or what you can do for her, but it is how much attention you give her. As soon as the wedding is finished, the husband and wife will have totally different feelings. The wife thinks that after the wedding, they'll be living happily thereafter. The husband, however, feels that a big job is done and he can start focusing on building his career. I don't mean career is not important, but I need to ask the husbands this - How much do you really value your wives? How much do you care about her needs?
I used to think that I really cared about my wife, until one day I heard a preacher on a tape asking a very simple question that spoke to my heart: "Have you prayed for your wife today?" Suddenly I felt a deep regret, because as a pastor I often pray for others, and I even pray for others with my wife, but I very seldom pray specifically for her. So let me ask you the same question: As a husband, how much do you care about your wife's needs? Do you pray for her regularly? No matter what reason you can come up with, whether it is work, life, family, or even church, no reason is great enough to justify neglecting your responsibility to your wife.
In addition to paying attention to your wife, you also need to understand your wife. I often hear husbands complain that their wives are very hard to understand and they mood can change several times a day. It is actually the responsibility of a husband to understand the emotions of wife, to understand her personality, way she communicates, her fears and her interests. Think about it - how much time do you spend on studying football, stocks and computer, and how much time do you spend on studying your wife? Facing an increasingly serious issue of divorce among Christians, husbands can no longer escape, but must learn to be real men, to courageously take on the responsibility for the success of the family.
So how should the husband not be harsh to the wives? Let me share with you a few principles for the modern days:
- Do not hurt your wife; no matter whether it's verbal or physical, hurting your wife does not please God.
- Do not put down your wife; remember, respecting your wife will make your prayer flow through smoothly.
- Do not stop communicating; silence is not golden, and silence is actually the primary reason for marriage problems.
All the husbands among us, are you willing to love your wife starting today?
Pray with Pastor Tong
Lord Jesus, I bless every husband, and I ask that Lord will grant your sacrificial love to us. We don't want to follow the trend and values of the world like cowards, but to follow your example of sacrifice to love our wives. Lord, give all the brothers courageous hearts so that we will proactively establish a Christian family. I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!
