Colossians 4:7-9

...that he may encourage your hearts.  He is coming with Onesimus, our faithful and dear brother, who is one of you. They will tell you everything that is happening here.

Paul really knew how to comfort people.  He knew that the Colossian church really cared about him and his situation, and he sent Tychecus and Onesimus back to Colossus to brief the church of his status, thus comforting the concerning hearts of the brothers and sisters.

Comforting each other in the Lord is one virtue that the church really needs to restore.  Nowadays, it is difficult to find friends who can comfort each other.  In the Bible, Job didn't lose his faith when the disasters happened or when his wife passed away, but he almost lost his faith when his friends came to visit him.  That's why Job said: "A despairing man should have the devotion of his friends, even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty."  When a person is in despair and disappointment, a friend's comfort is extremely important.  True friends can bring comfort to others around them, so are there people around us who are in despair and disappointment?  Are we bringing them comfort in the Lord with our love?

Most importantly, we must be sensitive the hearts of people.  Being sensitive doesn't mean agreeing with them or doing exactly what they expect.  When we are sensitive to others, it makes them feel respected and understood.  What people really need is the feeling of being understood and accepted.  Also, if you really want to comfort someone, you must take action of caring.  If you are sensitive to someone's feeling but never express it, they will still not be comforted.  Really caring might not involve some major action, but sometimes a call, a card or a visit can bring someone comfort that is far beyond what you can imagine.

Are there people who need to be comforted around you?  We very often know what to do, but we need the determination to actually do it, and then we can bring out the momentum for love in our life.

Pray with Pastor Tong

Lord Jesus, may you open our eyes so that we will see people in need around us.  Please send me among the people in need so that I may spread the love of Christ.  Through phone calls, cards and visitation, I want to share the love of Christ.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Colossians 4:5-6

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.  Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

How should we share the gospel with our family and friends?  Paul taught us to exercise wisdom when we are with the non-believers among our family and friends.  He instructed us to "make the most of every opportunity."  When God gives us opportunities to bear witness, do we seize them by telling them about your faith and sharing the message of salvation of the soul with them?  How exactly should we bear witness?

First, our conversation must "be always full of grace."  We must try to avoid argument while witnessing for the Lord.  Even if you win a debate, the person won't accept the faith; if you lose, then the person won't bother to come to church!  Your words must be graceful, for the Bible says that "a gentle answer turns away wrath."  Being graceful can turn away anger and also soften hearts, so that people would be more ready to accept the gospel.

Second, our conversation must be "seasoned with salt."  The Bible never described Christians as sugar of the world so that we would be sweet and loved by everyone.  Christians should speak positive words that edify people, but more importantly our words must agree with the truth with no false context.  Our words must be like salt; when placed on a wound, it will hurt at first, but it will disinfect the wound.  Some people preach the "sweetened" gospel, telling everything that peace and joy will come with believing, while bypassing the truth that all have sinned and fell short of God's glory.  People need to first repent and accept the Lord in order for them to have true peace and joy; therefore, our words must abide by the truth.

Third, we must be prepared to address questions.  We never know when an opportunity from God is going to come, so if your colleague or friend suddenly asks, "can you tell me about your faith," would you be able to explain your faith to him clearly?  Or, if a dying patient asked you, "can you lead me to believe in Jesus," would you be able to lead him to do a prayer to commit his life to Christ on the spot?  May God help us, let us always be prepared to share the good news of the Lord.

Pray with Pastor Tong

Lord Jesus, please open my eyes again so that I can see the opportunities to share the gospel that you have placed in my life.  Give me wisdom and courage, and let me depend on the power of your Spirit to spread your word everyday.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Colossians 4:2-4

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.  And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.  Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.

Paul has mentioned three attitudes in prayer that are important:

First, be consistent.  We encounter spiritual warfare everyday because the enemy is trying hard to delay God's grace in order to keep our hearts away from God.  Therefore, we must pray consistently.  It will help us to keep the fire for God in our hearts going, because the more you open your mouth to pray and more open your heart will be, and Spirit of God will be able to move more freely within you.  The more you pray, the more you will humble yourself and depend on God, thus you will maintain your passion for Him.

On the other hand, prayer can remove the obstacles set up by the devil and allow God's to come upon you more quickly.  When Daniel prayed for revelation about the future for twenty-one days, the messenger of God told him: "Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.  But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me twenty-one days."  Apparently, we may encounter spiritual warfare during prayer, but if we pray consistently God can shorten the time for the battle, or even dispatch an angel to help us.  If we do not pray consistently, the resistance may last more than 21 days.  Once you understand this principle, you will pray consistently without easily giving up.

Second, be watchful.  We need to understand God's will.  When prophet Habakkuk saw that the nation was in peril, he went up to a watchtower to pray in order to understand God's will.  During prayer time, we often only see the circumstance around us, and our mind would be filled with our own thoughts, just like when Habakkuk first got up to the watchtower.  He pleaded that God would defeat the Babylonians and save the Jewish people, but once we sought God's will in his prayer, he realized that it was God's will to let the Babylonians defeat the Jewish people, which was the opposite of what he thought of before.  When he understood God's will, we saw in Habakkuk chapter three that he started praying with God's power and wisdom.

Third, be thankful.  We need to give thanks for everything that God has done.  A thankful heart is the most direct path to bring us before God.  Psalm 100 says: "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise..."  God has already pace the way that leads to Him for us in the Bible.  It is not a way of rationality, but a way of thanksgiving and praise.  A thankful heart can bring forth a joyful spirit, and it can also lift a depressed heart before God again and again.

How is your prayer life?  If you think it's dull, then you must learn to be thankful, be on alert, and be consistent in your prayer.

Pray with Pastor Tong

Lord Jesus, I ask that you once again grant the spirit of prayer to my brothers and sisters.  Let prayer warriors rise up among us to pray faithful for the nation, family, church and themselves, so that your Kingdom will come and your will can be done.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Colossians 4:1

Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven.

Paul reminded the masters, or those who are supervisors, to treat their staff with principles that are right and fair.  While you may not be a supervisor at work, but you may still be supervising your children at home, leading brothers and sisters at church or managing volunteers in other places.  The principle of fairness must be exercised in all situations.

You must treat people with the same attitude that you would like the Lord in heaven to treat you.  We must not have double-standard, using one standard to treat others but expect the Lord to treat you differently.  The Lord told the parable of a man who owed the king ten thousand talents, but was forgiven by the benevolent king.  When he left the palace ran into someone who owed him a hundred denaris and wasn't able to pay back, he wanted the guy put in jail.  King heard about it and summoned him again to rebuke him as a wicked servant who should have forgiven the debt of others like how he was forgiven.  The teaching in this parable is also reflected in the Sermon on the Mount, as Matthews 7:12 says that "in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."  As a subordinate, you need to exercise these principles to treat those whom God entrusted you in the same way that you want your supervisor to treat you.

First of all, a successful supervisor needs to know how to encourage others.  Everyone needs encouragement - children expect affirmation from their parents, students expect praises from the teacher, spouse needs each other's attention, and subordinates expect your recognition.  We need to pay attention to their performance, to praise them when they are doing well, and do comfort them when they are not.  When subordinates know that the supervisor is paying attention to their performance, they will naturally work harder.

Second, a successful supervisor knows how to promote subordinates.  We need to promote those who are talented and not envy them.  Barnabas recognized Paul's abilities and spent time to train him.  It turned out that Paul came out ahead of Barnabas and became a more valuable vehicle in God's hands.  Barnabas didn't lose his sense of security and became jealous of Paul, but he instead continued to collaborate with Paul.  May God give us a bigger heart so that we can promote those who are talented.

Third, we need to correct mistakes appropriately.  Fairness is a standard, and a successful supervisor must have a set of principles and standards.  The same principles must be exercised everywhere - home, office, church or other organizations, otherwise people won't know what to expect and just become more frustrated.

Has God placed you in the position of a supervisor?  If so, I pray that the Lord will help you to uphold the principle of fairness and become a great supervisor!

Pray with Pastor Tong

Lord Jesus, I thank you because you are the Lord who is fair.  Please place in our hearts a fairness that is on the heaven, so that we will have the wisdom to supervise those you have entrusted us.  Lord, let me become someone who can encourage others today, and let your grace and mercy flow through us.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Colossians 3:24-25

...since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.  Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism.

Hallelujah!  There is no favoritism in the Lord!  He observes in secret and He rewards openly.  We often complain about how the wicked people are doing so well, but that is unnecessary because more important thing is that you don't become another wicked person.  Psalm 37:8 says that "Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret-it leads only to evil."  If you do something evil to the wicked people because you witnessed injustice caused by them, then you are no different from them.

Reverent Spurgeon said this: "There is no need to go around selling yourself and advertise your talents, because real talent will be sought after and we just need to make sure we are not second-class talent.  A little funnel cannot cover a big candle, and in the same way real talent will be revealed.  As long as you keep on trying your best, God will open doors for you when the time comes, for He is the best talent scout!"   The example of Joseph best illustrates the miraculous work in God's hands.   Joseph had a tumultuous life, as he was sold to Egypt by his brothers, falsely accused by his master's wife, then forsaken by his jail mate, consequently he was indefinitely detained in prison.  Joseph, however, sought God's presence in every difficult circumstance, faithfully performed his duties, and God made all the work assigned to him successful.  He eventually was released from prison by Pharaoh and was put in charge of the land of Egypt.  When God's time comes, His faithfulness and love will be manifested in you and me.

As we look at ourselves, we often see success or failure at the moment.  Therefore, when we succeed we are conceited, and when we fail we become frustrated.  God looks at us, however, in entirety, for He wants to shape us to please to Him through our whole life.  When David was hiding in the cave of Adullam and pretended to be mad before the Philistines, his life was truly depressing.  He, however, continuously chose to depend on God and told himself that "my heart, you will praise Jehovah," and God ultimately saved him and also called him a "man after His own heart."  So, don't be discouraged and disappointed, just trust that God is on the throne in every circumstance and difficulty, trust that God will take care of all His children, and trust that the Lord will bring forth justice and provide all your need.

Do you have such assurance?  Do you know that God is not only the Lord of life, but also Lord of every step in life?  His eyes never overlooked you and His arms never withdrew from you, for there is no favoritism in the Lord.

Pray with Pastor Tong

Lord Jesus, I thank you because you do not show favoritism.  No matter how we see ourselves before you, whether we are lamb that's fat, strong, skinny or weak, you will always guide us with your skillful hands.  Please open our eyes so that we see you sitting on the throne in charge of the process of our life.  Let us look upon you with faith because you will fulfill your purpose in my life.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!

Colossians 3:23

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men...

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus explained this truth in greater details.  The Lord said: "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.  So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men."

The Lord is not asking us to refrain from doing anything that shows on the outside.  Sometimes we do need to perform good deeds openly and to pray in the public.  The Lord is, however, asking us to not do these things in order to win rewards from people.  It is important to examine our motivation - are we seeking to please God or to please people?  Are we just doing these things for our own benefit?  Do we really entrust everything to God?

Paul has encouraged wives to obey the husbands, husbands to love the wives, children to obey parents, parents not to enrage the children, servants to obey the master; all these are not only submissiveness on the outside, but also in our hearts.  In every human relationship, it's always risky to take a step forward, because you never know how the other person will respond.  Will the person accept you or reject you?  Will the person ridicule you?  If you are doing it for yourself, then it makes sense for you to not take the first step of love and obedience, because by human nature we should always try to protect ourselves!  That's why Paul said that you must do it from the heart as if we are doing it for the Lord.  Matthew 6:4 says that "...your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."  He is the Father who will reward us.  You will have assurance that your good deeds will be rewarded accordingly when you know that your Father is watching you in secret.  When you take the first step of love and obedience, God will remember your good deed no matter how the other person responds.  When you give all you've got to the needy, God will provide you with what you need, because our Father "sees what is done in secret."

Brothers and sisters, do you have such an assurance?  If you have the assurance, you will be able to step forward in all your relationships by faith!

Pray with Pastor Tong

Lord Jesus, please open our eyes so that I can see you are sitting on the throne in our life.  I ask that you give assurance to brothers and sisters.  Starting today, no matter what we do, we no longer do it for people, but we do it from our heart, and only for you.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!
