Luke 22:24-30

Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.  Jesus said to them, 'The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.  But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.  For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.'

This must have been the scene of the disciples that hurt Jesus the most.  The Lord was explaining the meaning of the last supper on Passover, which was the most important moment of His time on earth.  He was prepared to take on the path to the cross, but the disciples were arguing who's the greatest of all.  They didn't understand the Lord's heart, because they thought the Kingdom of God is on earth.   They dreamed about how Jesus would become king on earth and thus they will land on a position in the government.  In fact, even after the resurrection of the Lord, they still had the same idea, and that's why they asked the Lord when He revealed Himself to them: Lord, is this the time you will revive the nation of Israel?  I believe that they finally realized that the Lord taught them after the Lord ascended to heaven and the Holy Spirit came upon them.

When the Lord was on earth, He used the analogy of a servant to explain His will.  The Lord said that whoever wants to be the greatest must be the servant for all, and whoever wants to be the head must be the servant as well, because the Son of Man did not come to be served, but rather to serve others.  When you are serving, do you understand the Lord's heart?  When we serve others, it's obvious for the benefit of others, but we sometime also value the good names and praises that we receive from others.  If no one noticed what we did, we feel unhappy and hurt.  So who is it that you and I are serving?  Is it God or ourselves?  Many people suffer while they serve in the church because they don't have a servant's heart.

Without the attitude of a servant, everything will be difficult to do.  If you are asked to move a chair, you would ask "why should I do it?  Why not ask the other guy?"  Just like Martha, who told Jesus: "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"  If we only see ourselves when we are serving, then our ministry will be bitter.  Only when we willingly serve in the form of a servant, asking for no return, will our ministry bring true blessing to others.  Brothers and sisters, what is your attitude in serving?  May God come and change us!

Pray with Pastor Tong

Lord, please give us a servant's heart, let us not seek to benefit ourselves, but to benefit you and the brothers and sisters.  Give us a soft and humble heart to become your vehicle, and let your grace flow out through us.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!
