Joshua 2:8-11
Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roofand said to them, "I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone's courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.
How did Rahab know that the Lord has given the land to Israelites? First, it is because she had heard of the works of the Lord. Although forty years had passed since Israelites crossed Red Sea, but it was still shocking for them. Therefore, when the Israelites army gathered at the east of Jordan River and was getting ready to cross it, everyone in Jericho was very worried, for they know that the God of the Israelites is a powerful God that nothing is impossible for Him.
Secondly, it is because she had seen that hearts of everyone in Jericho melted. Their hearts melted because they had heard of the news that the Egyptian army, who pursued the Israelites, ended up being destroyed by the sea and all the kings that were against Israelites were also destroyed.
Thirdly, she knew the nature of God. Rahab knew that the God we believe in is the God in heaven above and on the earth below. This means that God is the controller of our circumstances and nothing is impossible for Him. This also means that our God is not a God that doesn't bother with us; He can and is willing to deliver His people.
Do you know that the God you believe in is God in heaven and on the earth below? The Bible says that He is willing to grant us all grace, and He is still making way out of no way. The reason that Rahab had such a faith towards the Lord is because of the spirit of the Lord, who dwelled in her and generated faith in her. She is a soft person, for others might not feel anything after seeing and hearing all the news, but Rahab started to understand when she heard about it, and the Spirit of God brought out courage from inside her. She was such a brave woman, for very often we know what the will of God is but we are not willing to work with God. Rahab, however, dared to keep the two spies, which was extremely dangerous, and because of her brave heart she held on to the promise of God ultimately led to her salvation!
Dear Lord, we give thanks to you, for the Spirit You gave does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self discipline. May the Lord open our eyes to see that You are God in heaven above and on the earth below, may You strengthen our heart to be more determined to follow you. I thank you and I pray all these in the victorious name of Jesus, Amen!
