2 Timothy 2:11-13

"Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself."

Paul encouraged Timothy with a popular poem used by the church that time, the promise of the Lord will not only come upon Paul, it will also come upon all the people who remember the Lord. In this short poem, there are four conditional verses beginning with the word "if". "If we died with Christ, we will also live with him", if we want to live with God, first we need to learn to die with him. The so-called "die" and "live" are reactions to happenings; we die with God is to see ourselves dead to "sin". Ask the Lord to help us not to let our minds be tempted by sinful things, and then we can experience the gift of living with the Lord.

Second, "if we endure, we will also reign with him". This is to know the will of God, and let the will of God be done through us. We need to learn the lesson of endurance to know and complete the will of God. During suffering, we are oblivious to the will of God and we easily become impatient, relying on our own effort to overcome it, making things worse at the end. We need to learn to endure and wait; seeking God's will, and then we are able to fulfill God's will, and reign with Him.

The third and fourth conditional verses are actually about God's faithfulness. God is faithful, His words are not in vain, and every word will be fulfilled. Paul explains in two ways that God cannot disown himself: First, He cannot disown his righteousness, if we disown him, he will also disown us, here "disown" means rejection in the original text. If we reject Jesus, he will also reject us at the coming judgment. Next, he cannot disown his mercy, although the Lord is a righteous God, he is also a God of mercy. The "faithless" here refers to the falling of the disciples, although the believers will fall occasionally, thanks to God, he is faithful, he must save us; heal our wounds once again, such that we have peace with him. The God we believe is so precious; ask God to help us to always remember Him.

Pray with Pastor Tong

Lord, thank you, because you are the faithful God. Although we tend to lose faith and fall into sin, you still support us. Ask the Lord to help us, to die and to live with you, endure in all things and to reign with you. We give thanks and pray in the victorious name of Jesus, Amen!
