Luke 13:1-5

"Jesus answered, 'Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?  I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.  Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them-do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?  I tell you, no!  But unless you repent, you too will all perish.'"

People are self-righteous.  If other commits sin, they are totally guilty, but if we sin, it's a trivial matter.  Therefore, when we criticize others, we use all kinds of derogatory words, but when we face our own shortcomings, we preach that no one is a saint and sinless.  That's why when Jesus rebuked the Jewish people back then, asking whether what Pontius Pilate did was worse than what the people did, or whether those who perished in a natural or manmade disaster deserves are less righteous than them.  The difference between them is simply insignificant.  That is why the Lord said, in verse five, that "...unless you repent, you too will all perish."

Many people don't like to mention the word sin, thinking that they are good as long as they act according to their good conscience.  The fact is that ever since sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, conscience of human beings has been polluted by sin and has lost its normal function.  I recall that when I went back to Taiwan before, many public places had "good conscience umbrellas." umbrellas for any one who needed them, and they could simply place them back when they were done.  The problem was that so after a while, all the "good conscience umbrellas" were gone as people hardly ever return them.  Our "good conscience" has long been polluted by sin and lost its standard.  Not only that, even though our conscience might be partially functioning, people will find all kinds of ways to suppress and escape from the voice of our conscience.  The most obvious example is that when we commit sin we always find excuses to explain our behavior.  After Adam sinned, he was asked why he ate the fruit on the tree of good and evil.  He said that it wasn't him who wanted to eat it, but it was the woman, who was created by God, that wanted him to eat it.

The biggest problem with human beings is to not acknowledge our own sin; unless the problem of sin is resolved, we will never enjoy true peace, joy and satisfaction.  Are you will to let the blood of Jesus Christ to wash away all your sins?  God can save us from the bondage of sin; as long as we are willing to acknowledge our sin, He can forgive us!

Pray with Pastor Tong

Dear Lord, I thank you because your precious blood is still effective today, and it can wash away all sins.  We acknowledge our sin of self-righteousness before you, and we ask that you forgive us and wash us clean.  I thank you and I pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!
