1 John 1:9-10

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us."

Why is it so important to confess our sins? Why our sins are not forgiven until we confess our sins? Actually it is not that God cannot forgive our sins. Rather, we cannot overcome the oppression of the sins until we seriously confess our sins. It is just like when I have arguments with Pastor Belinda. Even though she is forgiving, there is still something unsolved between us until I say sorry. Likewise, when we come to God and confess our sins, it is actually not for God, but for our own sake, so that we can approach God with boldness. In fact, this passage gives us a precious promise. God always keeps his promise and never breaks one. So when we confess to him our sins, we don't have to worry that he might punish us, for his word is the proof that He says He will certainly forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

When we have such a faithful and righteous God, shouldn't we bring all our needs to Him in prayer with boldness? When we confess our sins, we have to be specific. Why? Why can't we just say: "Lord, forgive all my sins"? The reason is that you haven't taken that sin seriously. Even it is forgiven, that sin still oppresses you, which is why many believers keep sinning. The problem is not the outward sin, but its power inside. Therefore, ask the Lord to examine your heart to check whether there is anything that God doesn't like, and ask for His forgiveness and purification by His precious blood. You can take out a piece of paper right now and draw a line in the middle. Ask the Lord to help you list on the left side all your sins and iniquities, and take them to the Lord. On the right side, just write down 1 John 1:9. Then proclaim in the name of the Lord that all your sins are forgiven! Praise Him and thank Him. Then dispose of, tear up, or burn this piece of paper, and receive God's forgiveness by faith.

God's salvation is not just for your past and your future, but something that you may experience right now. May God's grace of forgiveness come to you today!

Pray with Pastor Tong Liu

Lord, we thank you and we bring all our sins and iniquities to you. You are faithful and righteous. When we confess our sins, you will erase all our transgressions. We thank you and we pray in the victorious name of Jesus, amen!
