These verses are easy to cause controversy, because they say that it is impossible for some to be brought back to repentance. The background of the verses are:
.
First, those people were once enlightened. The main purpose of being enlightened is to let us know sins, like coming in front of a mirror, letting you see your filthiness, but not able to get rid of filthiness. The work of Holy Spirit is just the same, it makes us know our sins, but it will not get rid of our sins voluntarily. Unless we willingly admit our sins, willingly receive Christ as our savior, will God's precious blood rid of our sins.
.
Second, they have tasted the heavenly gift. That is, those people understand God's grace, understand God, and understand God's blessings. We could understand God's grace in us, but unless we receive it with our humble heart, it is impossible to come into the relationship with Jesus Christ.
.
Third, they have shared in Holy Spirit. This doesn't mean living inside Holy Spirit, but rather experiencing the work of Holy Spirit. There are those who fell in the Holy Spirit, who are healed by Holy Spirit, but are not Christians. The work of Holy Spirit sometimes reaches all the people in a gathering, whether one has been saved or not, so it is not reserved only for those who believe in Lord. In this process, many shared the Holy Spirit, yet still refusing God's work with their hardened heart.
.
Forth, they have tasted the goodness of the word of God. It means that they have read God's word, have understood that God's precious word is a lamp to their feet, and a light to their path. But merely understanding is not enough. Unless they follow God's word, it will not be of real help.
.
Fifth, they realize the power of the coming age. They understand the truth of Lord's second coming, and understand that the only thing missing in this this brief journey of life is the direct relationship with Lord. What they need is to let Jesus come into their hearts taking control of their lives. That's why verse six says that in their final choice, they still forsake Lord's truth, select their own way. Because they have long focused on their own ideas, refusing Jesus Christ, they no longer have the opportunity to repent. Some have long rejected the Holy Spirit working in themselves, rejecting the Gospels vehemently. It is as if they have crucified Jesus on the cross all over again. We pray for God's mercy such that we will never be like them, and let all the people around us experience God's grace.
