Psalm 20:1-9
May the Lord answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you. May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion. May he remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings. May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed. May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the Lord grant all your requests!...
Psalm contains lots of parallel verses, and it is demonstrated particularly clearly in this passage. Verse one, "May the Lord answer you when you are in distress," is parallel with "may the name of the God of Jacob protect you," as they have the same meaning. To paraphrase: May God protect us, but how would He do it? By answering your prayer. When God answers our prayer, He's protecting us.
Verse two says "May he send you help from the sanctuary" and "grant you support from Zion." These two verses are also in parallel. To paraphrase, God supports us through listening to our prayer in the sanctuary. When God helps us, He's strengthening our faith. Verse three says "May he remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings. " God remembers all the sacrifices we made and accepts all our offerings. "May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed" means that God will give us whatever we wish for, and everything that we've planned before God will be accomplished. This is such a precious word! We can bring before God everything that we wish for and cry out to Him, and He will accomplish all our plans.
We often talk about proclaiming victory against the enemy and lifting up banner in the name of the Lord, but we don't really understand the true meaning of these words. Verse five says "May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the Lord grant all your requests." These three sentences in parallel point out that when we proclaim victory by the salvation of God, and lift up our banners in His name, we know that God will accomplish all things that we ask from our hearts. Hallelujah! Let us shout with thanksgiving and praise, for God is faithful and He will lead us to proclaim victory against the enemy each and every day!
