Luke 24:36-43
While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace be with you.' They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, 'Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.' When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, 'Do you have anything here to eat?' They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence.
When the Lord revealed Himself to the disciples after His resurrection, the first thing He said that them was "Peace be with you." "Peace" was what the disciples needed to most, because they were bewildered inside. When they were following Jesus, Jesus would take on anything for them, but now they had no one to turn to. Also, their hearts were lost, because even though Jesus had prophesied His suffering, the disciples still thought that the Kingdom of Jesus was going to be established on earth; therefore, when Jesus actually died, they were disappointed, and they, particularly Peter, were also disappointed at themselves. He thought he would acknowledge that Jesus was his Lord, but he then denied the Lord three times in front of female servants. He was completely disappointed with himself - how could he be used by God again? At that time, they were filled with fear, because they didn't know the way in front of them.
When Jesus said "Peace be with you," it wasn't just a line of greeting. Jesus IS the Lord of peace, because He not only brings down peace, He personifies peace. Humans are by nature fearful, which is obviously deception by the enemy. Someone said before that if one day God actually revealed Himself to us, we would not be afraid of Him. This person has probably never experienced God's direct revelation. In the Bible, every time God or angels revealed to people, the first reaction from the people was always fear. Not just fear, but when disciples saw the Lord walking on the sea, they thought He was a ghost, but didn't think that could have been God's work.
Although fear is human nature, when the Lord revealed Himself, His spirit can touch us and bring us tremendous peace. Do you have peace in your life? Perhaps you are like the disciples back then, you feel bewildered, lost and fearful, but the Lord wants to touch you with His mighty power of resurrection. After the Lord resurrected, He was eating and drinking in front of the disciples. That was important because it demonstrated that the power of resurrection can enter into real life; it's not a vague thing in fantasy, but it's real and it can bring power to our life. Let us receive this truth by faith!
