From these verses, we can see that the believers had once been very passionate. They suffered all kinds of trials, but did not grumble. They were willing to suffer and to be with those who were suffering so they could encourage and comfort them. Also, these believers did not care about the possessions of this world, and accepted the confiscation of their property because they knew they had a lasting inheritance in heaven which God had prepared for them.
.
Sadly, their hearts have grown cold subsequently. The author of Hebrews sternly warned them not to neglect the Lord's salvation. Hence we see that these believers have become weak in the faith because they did not see God's promises come to pass. They had been waiting for a long time and experienced much hardship while waiting to see God moving. Their hearts were discouraged after a long period of waiting. We need to come before God again so that the Holy Spirit can remind us to fix our eyes on our heavenly treasures, so that we may endure the earthly persecution and troubles.
.
We actually have two choices before us that come from two worlds. One is from God which satisfies the hearts of people and endures forever. The other which comes from the world is temporal and cannot satisfy us. One cannot be seen or touched, but it is real. The other can be seen and surrounds us, yet is transient. These two things cause much struggle within us and brings great conflict and every day we are forced to choose between the two. This was the same for the early church. They were passionately serving the Lord and encountered all kinds of hardships and persecution without being discouraged. However, after some time, they could no longer withstand the test because they could not see God's promises being fulfilled and only saw what was going on in their surroundings. Just like Peter when he was trying to walk on water like Jesus. When his eyes were looking at Jesus, he could walk on water. However, when his eyes shifted to his surroundings, he started feeling afraid and immediately fell into the sea. May the Lord help us to recognize the right choices; not just to look in retrospect at the choices we have made in the past, but to make the right choice to follow God each and every day!
